It was a split decision in home entertainment last week. New Line’s “Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay” squeaked past MGM’s “Stargate: Continuum” to top the DVD sales chart in its first week in stores, while Sony holdover “21” was the top renter for the second consecutive week.
In raw Nielsen VideoScan First Alert numbers, the difference between “Harold & Kumar,” the sequel to 2004’s raunchy “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,” and “Stargate: Continuum,” a direct-to-video spinoff of the long-running sci-fi TV series, amounted to fewer than 200 units. VideoScan numbers do not include Wal-Mart, the nation’s No. 1 DVD seller, or Sam’s Club.
“21,” the previous week’s top seller, slipped to No. 3 on the sales charts, followed by three other new releases: Universal’s “Never Back Down,” a teen drama that grossed $24.8 million in theaters, at No. 4; the theatrical underperformer “Doomsday,” also from Universal, at No. 5; and the DTV sequel “Lost Boys: The Tribe,” from Warner, at No. 6.
On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week ending Aug. 3, “Harold & Kumar” debuted at No. 2, generating 91% as much rental activity as “21” did in its sophomore week. “Doomsday” debuted at No. 4, while “Never Back Down” bowed at No. 6 and “Lost Boys” finished just out of the top 10.
On the nascent Blu-ray Disc format, “Stargate: Continuum” emerged as the week’s top seller, with “Harold & Kumar” at No. 2.
