Harvey Weinstein continued to be “closely monitored” by prison medical staff on Friday after experiencing a fever earlier in the week, according to his publicist.
“Mr. Weinstein has a fever and is being closely monitored by the excellent medical staff at Wende CF for which the entire legal defense team is grateful,” rep Juda Englemayer told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement on Wednesday.
The news came amid reports that the disgraced former movie mogul and convicted rapist, who is currently serving a 23-year sentence at New York’s Wende Correctional Facility, had tested positive for COVID-19.
However, after saying on Wednesday that they could “neither confirm nor deny that Mr. Weinstein has tested positive for COVID-19,” Englemayer and Craig Rothfeld, who is Weinstein’s authorized department of corrections NYS department of healthcare representative, updated their statement on Thursday to reflect Weinstein’s current condition.
“We can report that Mr. Weinstein’s fever has dropped but is still being closely monitored. We can also report at this time that he does not have COVID-19,” they tell THR in a joint statement.
After noting that “it should come as no surprise that Mr. Weinstein has numerous maladies and conditions including a heart condition, high blood pressure and spinal stenosis,” the reps said they were working with the NYSDOCCS and the team at Wende CF to “ensure Mr. Weinstein receives the proper medical attention he needs.”
On Thursday, they noted that Weinstein “continues to be very closely monitored due to the plethora of underlying health issues which are continuing to decline, get worse, and need treatment.”
Adding, “We all remain concerned about his health.”
By Friday, his fever had dropped but he remained closely monitored, Englemayer told THR.
Weinstein was convicted of committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree and third-degree rape in March.
Following his sentencing, he was hospitalized multiple times over chest pains. Later that month, he was held in isolated custody after two inmates at Wende CF tested positive for the coronavirus amid reports that he himself had tested positive for the virus. However, Weinstein was never officially diagnosed.
Weinstein is currently facing additional sexual assault charges in Los Angeles.
