NEW DELHI — India’s awards season kicked off Thursday night in Mumbai with the 14th Star Screen Awards, which saw hockey drama “Chak De India!” (“Let’s Go India”) winning best film, while its lead Shah Rukh Khan bagged best actor.
The best director nod saw a tie between “Chak De India!” helmer Shimit Amit, and Aamir Khan, the director of and actor in the kids drama “Taare Zameen Par” (“Stars on Earth”), which also bagged the most awards with six, including best supporting actor for Khan.
The awards are presented by News Corp.’s Star India network with Mumbai-based trade journal Screen and will be telecast on Hindi entertainment channel Star Plus next week.
Best actress went to Kareena Kapoor for her comic-romantic turn in “Jab We Met” (“When We Met”) and best music director for A R Rahman (credits include the West End musical “Bombay Dreams”) for “Guru.”
The Star Screen Lifetime Achievement Award went to veteran actor-director Manoj Kumar known for his five decade career that included hits like 1970’s “Purab Aur Paschim” (East and West).
The ceremony — hosted by TV comic and director Sajid Khan, actor Shreyas Talpade and actress Saagarika Ghatge — included onstage performances of some popular songs from 2007 films such as “Om Shanti Om.”
