NEW DELHI — The Indian Information and Broadcasting Ministry has set a goal of capturing a 5% share of the global film industry by 2007. India’s current share stands at 2%.
I&B Minister P.S. Dasmunsi made the announcement late Thursday as the India chapter of the U.S.-Asia Business Forum in Mumbai was inaugurated.
He added that the government is setting up five core groups to evaluate growth areas in the film industry and, based on their findings and recommendations, “necessary action will be initiated. In order to improve the quality of film scripts, plans are afoot to upgrade two film training institutes/schools.”
He also said that steps will be undertaken to increase the “global visibility and acceptability of Indian cinema, including an increased presence at various film festivals like Cannes.”
