The Trieste Film Festival’s co-production forum, When East Meets West (WEMW), is set to bring together the producers and directors of 22 projects from 15 European countries in late January.
One of a raft of industry programs across Europe that aim to offer networking and project incubation services to bridge the continent’s geopolitical map, Trieste’s fourth three-day forum will focus on working with the Benelux countries.
Organized by Venice’s Fondo per l’Audiovisivo of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the event will include a series of panels and meetings on co-production opportunities with Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
The 22 projects range from Luxembourg feature project 1313 Dante’s Emperor, directed by Bady Minck and produced by Alexander Dumreicher-Ivanceanu, to Lithuanian documentary Searching for Antigravity, directed and produced by Arunas Matelis.
The projects were selected from 200 submissions from 29 countries by an international panel of industry experts before choosing the 10 documentaries and 12 features, all of which are in development, ready to be presented to a wide range of producers and distributors.
“The notable increase in the number of projects bears witness not only to the successful concept of WEMW, but also to the growing interest in the new EU countries in establishing co-production relationships in Western Europe and vice versa,” said Paolo Vidali, director of the Fondo per l’Audiovisivo del Friuli Venezia Giulia.
A new prize of €5,000 ($6,880), the FILMMORE Emerging Talent Award, sponsored by a major Benelux postproduction studio, is being added to the standard event prizes that include the WEMW Development Award for best project and a study grant for participation in the next edition of the EAVE European Producers Workshop.
Prizes will be judged by an international jury that includes Nikolaj Nikitin (FILMPLUS), Matthieu Darras (TORINO FILM LAB) and Kristina Trapp (EAVE).
When East Meets West runs during the Trieste Film Festival, from January 20-22, 2014.
