CANNES — IFC Films will kick it with Ken Loach, acquiring U.S. rights to the director’s soccer comedy “Looking for Eric,” which premiered this week In Competition at the Festival de Cannes.
Loach’s movie centers on a down-on-his-luck postman whose life turns around when he conjures up English soccer star Eric Cantona. Cantona stars as himself in the film.
Paul Laverty wrote the script, and Rebecca O’Brien produced the pic, which marks a somewhat lighter tone than previous Loach films.
With the deal, IFC is collaborating again with the director, whose Palme d’Or-winning “The Wind That Shakes the Barley” it released in 2006.
The deal marks the second for IFC of a fest film and the third announced at the fest.
Wild Bunch repped the filmmakers in the sale.
