Lionsgate grossed $367.6 million in 2007, topping its 2006 numbers with a diverse slate that included horror, comedy, drama and documentary. The indie distributor enjoyed three No. 1 openings in the fall, with the bloody “Saw IV,” the unapologetic Western “3:10 to Yuma” and Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?” Attracting more than $55 million, “Married” further demonstrated Perry’s connection to his audience. However, another franchise film, “Hostel: Part II,” bled out below expectations as slasher movies lost some of their appeal. Lionsgate in 2007 also acquired Mandate Pictures for $56.3 million in cash and stock. As part of the deal, Mandate’s Joe Drake takes over as co-COO and president of Lionsgate’s motion picture group while continuing as CEO of Mandate.
