Time for more adventures in trademarking. Previously, we looked at which Jersey Shore star could actually trademark their name and Warner Bros.’ incredible trademark diligence on Harry Potter’s favorite sport Quidditch. Our latest query…who is going to be the first to open up a Lisbeth Salander tattoo parlor?
Later this year, Sony Pictures is scheduled to release the much-anticipated English-language adaptation of Stieg Larsson‘s incredibly popular book “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” In the meantime, several companies have stepped up to grab trademark rights on some of the titles and characters from the Swedish book trilogy, which also includes “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.”
The titles to the works themselves were registered in the United States last October by a company called Wasp Industries. Those who have read the book will recognize Wasp Industries as being the front corporation that the hacking main character, Salander, sets up to mask her ill-gotten gains. Let’s hope that Wasp Industries, which is listed on the trademark application as being located in Henderson, Nevada, is a front for Sony or one of the film’s producers. Otherwise, there could be a lawsuit. Wasp claimed rights over “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” include “downloadable multimedia file containing artwork, text, audio, video, games, and Internet Web links relating to entertainment and movies,” not to mention colognes, perfumes, games, slot machines, stationary, belts, footwear, hats, trading cards, etc.
Wasp isn’t the only company to make a stake.
There’s also a Swedish company called Moggliden AB Aktiebola that has registered in the U.S. the name of “Lisbeth Salander” herself. The company’s claimed trademark rights cover bleaching preparations and other substances for laundry use; life-saving and teaching apparatus and instruments; games adapted for use with external screens; magnetic data carriers; automatic vending machines and mechanisms for coin-operated apparatus; fire-extinguishing apparatus; gymnastic and sporting articles; decorations for Christmas trees; Hygienic and beauty care for human beings or animals; and many other items. The last category included? Tattooing.
So perhaps Moggliden AB Aktiebola will come out with a commercial chain of tattoo parlors built on one of the most popular characters in contemporary entertainment. In the real world, at least.
There’s also the Quotidian Group, doing business as LisbethSalander.com, which has registered itself with the U.S. Trademark Office, and claims the right to use “Lisbeth Salander” for “on-line retail store services featuring physical and virtual merchandise for use by members of an online community in connection with a designated website featuring fictional characters.”
We’re not exactly sure what that means, but maybe the company is building, excuse our trademark infringing tag-line suggestion, the “Amazon.com of Fictional Characters,” hosted by Lisbeth Salander. Need to tattoo your Facebook page? Perhaps you’re in luck.
