Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to Bong Joon-Ho’s “Mother,” a thriller about a mother’s love for her son that is Korea’s submission for the best foreign-language film Oscar.
Planning a retrospective of Bong’s work, Magnolia also acquired his 2000 debut film “Barking Dogs Never Bite.”
“Mother,” which debuted at the Festival de Cannes, is scheduled to play both the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.
“We are thrilled to be in the Bong Joon-Ho business again, and to be doing our first deal with CJ Entertainment,” Magnolia senior vp Tom Quinn said.
The deal was negotiated by Quinn and Magnolia head of business affairs Chris Matson, with Kini S. Kim, senior vp of CJ Entertainment, and Eric Kim, director of international sales.
