TORONTO — Canadian indie distributor Maple Pictures has picked up Samuel Maoz’s “Lebanon” from Celluloid Dreams after the Israeli battlefield film earned the Golden Lion prize in Venice and screened in Toronto.
Toronto-based Maple acquired all Canadian rights to the gut-wrenching foreign-language drama based on real events during Israel’s 1982 Lebanon War.
The deal was hammered out by John Bain, senior vp distribution at Pictures and Violaine Pichon for Celluloid Dreams.
Maple recently released another war drama, Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker.”
The Israeli film is also expected to receive a stateside release, with Sony Pictures Classics and IFC circling Maoz’s war drama during its North American premiere in Toronto. (Update: SPC takes rights to ‘Lebanon’)
