Former eBay boss Meg Whitman has now contributed more to her campaign for California governor than any other political candidate in American history.
Her contributions to her own campaign have risen to $119 million thanks to a latest donation, besting the previous record set by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spent $109 million in his campaign for a third term last year, the Associated Press reported.
The spending spree is a key part of the Republican candidate’s bid to beat Democratic Attorney General Jerry Brown.
On Wednesday, Whitman defended the personal contributions, saying they mean she won’t be beholden to special interests if she wins. She also argued she must spend a lot of money in a state where there are 2.3 million more registered Democrats than Republicans.
