BD Live lures buyers
A new study from the NPD Group suggests that the BD Live technology’s Web-enabled special features could be a big lure for consumers to make the switch from standard DVD to Blu-ray Disc. A survey found that 82% of consumers planning to buy either a set-top Blu-ray Disc player or a Blu-ray-enabled Sony PlayStation 3 were interested in such potential BD Live features as selecting different camera angles (47%), downloading additional content (41%) and buying products tied to the movie (20%).
Seeking to capitalize on the upcoming “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” theatrical feature, Cinequest Distribution is releasing a little-known Gillian Anderson movie 10 days before the film’s July 25 opening. “The Mighty Celt,” filmed in Ireland and released in 2005, hits DVD July 15.
Echo Bridge expands
Echo Bridge Entertainment is launching a digital distribution arm and has hired Kyle Kaczmarek to run it. With its acquisition of Alliance Atlantis International Distribution, Echo Bridge now has a library of more than 11,000 titles, one of the largest independent libraries in the world.
Anchor Bay ups duo
Ray Gagnon has been promoted to executive vp worldwide sales at Anchor Bay Entertainment. Gagnon joined Anchor Bay in December 2003 as head of the indie’s domestic sales efforts. Anchor Bay also promoted Brian Daley to senior vp worldwide business operations.
