After price increases in Canada and the U.S., Netflix is also rolling out price hikes for existing subscribers in the U.K. from this week.
The streaming giant, led by co-CEOs Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos, upped the cost of its standard plan by £1 to £9.99 ($13.59) per month and its premium plan by £2 to £13.99 ($19.03) a month. The basic plan’s monthly price remained unchanged at £5.99 ($8.15).
Existing members are notified by email, as well as within the Netflix app a month before the new prices are applied to them. For new U.K. subscribers, the new pricing applied as of Dec. 10.
“This year we’re spending over $1 billion in the U.K. on new, locally-made films, series and documentaries, helping to create thousands of jobs and showcasing British storytelling at its best – with everything from The Crown, to Sex Education and Top Boy, plus many, many more,” a Netflix representative said. “Our price change reflects the significant investments we’ve made in new TV shows and films, as well as improvements to our product. Our basic membership will remain at the same price, ensuring as many people as possible can enjoy our content.”

The changes are similar to ones unveiled in the U.S. Late in 2020, Netflix boosted the cost of two of its plans in the U.S., marking its first price increase in a year and a half. The monthly fee for the U.S. standard plan, which lets people stream on two screens at the same time and includes access to Netflix’s HD library, went up by $1 to $14, while its highest-price premium plan, which allows up to four streams and includes access to ultra HD programming, increased by $2 to $18. Netflix kept its cheapest offering, the basic plan, at $9 per month.
