Pyramid builds overseas plans
NEW DELHI — Diversified entertainment company Pyramid Saimira Theatre said Friday that it plans to raise $400 million overseas by March. The move, which will require shareholder approval, was put forth at the company’s Thursday meeting of the board. The company said it is exploring raising the funds via various possible financial vehicles, including foreign currency convertible bonds, global depository receipts and American depository receipts — basically, a U.S. stock market listing. With interests in film, TV production and distribution, PSTL operates more than 700 screens in India, Malaysia, Singapore and the U.S.
CanWest gets OK for Alliance pickups
TORONTO — Canadian broadcaster CanWest Global Communications and equity partner Goldman Sachs have received final approval to acquire 13 cable channels from Alliance Atlantis Communications. Winnipeg-based CanWest Global said that the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, Canada’s TV regulator, removed the final hurdle to the takeover of the Alliance Atlantis channels, which are valued at about $1.4 billion.
Oscar noms go mainstream on Web
The announcement of the Oscar nominations Tuesday will stream live at Oscar.com for the first time. It will be the centerpiece of expanded content offerings leading up to the big event, including an Oscar prediction game and an Oscar widget that can be embedded on social networking sites. Oscar.com is a joint production of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and Disney-ABC Television Group.
‘Grey’s’ treated for mobile game
SAN DIEGO — ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” is getting its own game as publisher Gameloft said that it is bringing out “Grey’s Anatomy: The Mobile Game.” The title will be available as a download on most U.S. wireless service carriers and primarily is aimed at casual gamers, enabling users to play as characters from the show’s first three seasons.
DP Primes primed for SOC prize
Director of photography Robert Primes will receive the Society of Camera Operator’s President’s Award for lifetime achievement in the industry and dedication to the SOC. Two-time Emmy winner Primes has served on the board of directors of the International Cinematographers Guild and as vp and treasurer of the American Society of Cinematographers. The SOC’s 2008 Lifetime Achievement and Camera Operator of the Year Awards presentation will be held Feb. 16 at the Goldenson Theatre of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in North Hollywood.
Shearer to host ADG awards
“Eex-cell-ennnt,” as “The Simpsons’ ” Mr. Burns would say. Harry Shearer, the voice of Burns and many other “Simpsons” characters, will host the 12th annual Art Directors Guild Awards ceremony Feb. 16 at the Beverly Hilton. Eight ADG awards for excellence in production design will be handed out in TV, film and commercials categories.
