NEW YORK — CBS Corp. said Wednesday that it has agreed to purchase music-focused social network Last.fm for $280 million in cash. Last.fm has more than 15 million users in more than 200 countries. It creates communities around musical taste and provides recommendations and custom radio streams for its users through its own technology.
‘True up’ request
WASHINGTON — Webcasters are asking a federal court to suspend the so-called “true up” date when they would have to pay copyright holders a higher royalty payment for digitally delivered music. The Digital Media Assn. asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to suspend the July 15 date that would require them to pay what they owe from a substantially higher royalty the Copyright Royalty Board said should be paid.
NEW YORK — A former “Dateline” producer alleges that she was let go from NBC News after she complained of ethical lapses on the show’s “To Catch a Predator.” Marsha Bartel has filed suit in U.S. District Court in Chicago seeking at least $1 million in damages. She alleges that NBC breached her contract. Bartel contends that she was fired after raising issues about the conduct of Perverted Justice, the organization that is paid by NBC News to carry out the sting operations, and NBC. NBC denied the charges and Bartel’s claims.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation and Ernst & Young Llp. said Wednesday that Tracy Pereira from Temple University and Nicole Martins from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, are the respective recipients of the third Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship in the production and research categories. The students will each receive $10,000 scholarships to be presented Sunday.
