Chan star of China anti-piracy poster
SHANGHAI — Holding out a firm, chopsocky hand, Jackie Chan stared out of an anti-piracy poster for China that was unveiled Saturday at the 10th Shanghai International Film Festival. The posters — which feature the Hong Kong action star and the message “Save the movies, say no to piracy!” — were designed to draw attention to a problem rampant here and are destined for buses, Internet cafes, shopping malls, mobile phone outlets and universities throughout China. A campaign to distribute 40,000 anti-piracy posters will be launched by the China Film Copyright Protection Assn. and the film festival organizer and was announced by the MPA. The MPA estimates that as much as $1.2 billion in ticket sales were lost in 2005 when consumers in the Asia-Pacific region illegally copied films and music and that studios lost $6.1 billion to worldwide piracy in 2005, $1.3 billion of which was lost in the U.S.
Netflix, Anywhere pact for ‘Antonia’
Anywhere Road and Netflix’s Red Envelope Entertainment have acquired North American rights to the award-winning “Antonia,” a Brazilian musical drama from writer-director Tata Amaral. “Antonia” revolves around four friends who dream of becoming a professional hip-hop R&B band. The film is co-written by Roberto Moreira and produced by Amaral and Georgia Costa Araujo, with Andrea Barata Ribeiro, Bel Berlinck and Fernando Meirelles serving as co-producers. It opens Aug. 17 in the U.S.
Fox making upfront gains with buyers
NEW YORK — Fox has reported movement in upfront negotiations to join NBC as the networks that have confirmed they have done deals with media buyers. “We’ve come to terms with many of our clients, and negotiations are under way with the rest,” a Fox spokeswoman said Friday. She declined to provide details. It wasn’t clear what kind of CPM increases Fox was getting, though the network finished first in the key adults 18-49 demographic on the strength of “American Idol.”
Venice taps ‘Atonement’ as opener
ROME — The 64th annual Venice Film Festival will open with Joe Wright’s “Atonement,” starring Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and Vanessa Redgrave, organizers said. Based on Ian McEwan’s Booker Prize-winning novel, “Atonement” is a U.K. production, and its choice fits with Venice artistic director Marco Mueller’s Festival de Cannes statements that English-language productions will feature heavily at this year’s event. The Venice fest runs Aug. 29-Sept. 8.
BroadLogic gets Comcast funding boost
The investment arm of cable giant Comcast Corp. has announced that it is joining fellow cable operator Advance/Newhouse in a $17 million second round of funding for BroadLogic Network Technologies, a Silicon Valley, Calif., startup that develops chips to enable superfast Internet access and more high-definition TV channels. Comcast Interactive Capital did not provide specifics about the investment. BroadLogic’s other investors include Time Warner Inc., Cisco Systems Inc. and Intel Corp.
Cheadle, Mailer on Film Society schedule
Don Cheadle, Norman Mailer and a simulcast of the Live Earth world concerts are among this summer’s main attractions at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York. Cheadle will attend a screening and discussion of his Focus Features film “Talk to Me” on July 10, and Mailer will appear July 22 at a screening of his 1983 directorial debut “Tough Guys Don’t Dance.”
