Jarl Mohn, formerly a CEO at E! Entertainment Television and current chairman at Southern California Public Radio, has been named NPR’s CEO, the public broadcaster said on Friday.
Mohn, 62, becomes the replacement for exec Gary Knell, who departed on Aug. 19 of last year to become the president and CEO of the National Geographic Society.
On Sept. 13, NPR named Paul G. Haaga Jr. the acting CEO and officially appointed a search committee to look for the next permanent replacement.
“This is not a job for me. It is a mission. I love public radio and NPR. It is a national treasure and more important now than ever,” said Mohn in a statement. “I want to make sure the staff of NPR, the Member Stations and the others who make it happen have everything they need to do their best work.”
Mohn is set to begin as NPR CEO in July. The exec is the founder of Liberty Digital and his resume includes an eight-year run as president and CEO of E! from 1990-1998.
