We voiced skepticism the other day about a Washington Post story that claimed the RIAA had taken a new position on the legality of transferring music from a CD to a computer.
Last night, RIAA president Cary Sherman and Post columnist (and author of the story) Marc Fisher debated the issue on National Public Radio. According to coverage by CNET, “Fisher was on the defense as Sherman picked apart his story.” (Here’s an audio recording of the debate.)
“The Post picked up one sentence in a 21-page brief and then picked the part of the sentence about ripping CDs onto the computer,” Sherman said during the radio show. “(The Post) simply ignored the part of the sentence about putting them into a shared folder.”
Guess that answers that question.
CNET’s Greg Sandoval, a former Washington Post reporter, believes the paper should issue a correction.
