The local animated film Ivan Tsarevich I Sery Volk 3 (Prince Ivan and The Grey Wolf 3) was on top of Russia’s box office this past weekend.
Directed by Darina Shmidt and based on a Russian fairy tale, the third part in the Prince Ivan franchise grossed $3.9 million (295.3 million rubles), according to data from research company Movie Research.
The franchise’s two previous parts were released in 2011 and 2013, grossing $24.8 million and $19.3 million, respectively. A sharp drop in the national currency’s value had a negative impact on the new movie’s performance in dollar terms.
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens was in second place, adding $2.7 million (205.3 million rubles) to its take.
Samy luchshi den (The Best Day Ever), produced by Timur Bekmambetov’s Bazelevs and directed by Zhora Kryzhovnikov, was in third place. The karaoke-themed comedy grossed $2.3 million (178.5 million rubles).
Mafia: Igra na vyzhivaniye (Mafia: Survival Game), a local sci-fi movie directed by Sarik Andreasyan, was in fourth place. It took in $2 million (152.7 million rubles).
The local New Year’s-themed comedy Strana chudes (Wonderland), directed by Dmitry Dyachenko and Maxim Sveshnikov, took fifth place, grossing $1.99 million (152.3 million rubles).
For the first time in months, a local film was on top of the box office and the top five was dominated by Russian movies.
