Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation arrived on top of the Russian box office, but, contrary to predictions, failed to break any records.
The fifth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise grossed 234.1 million rubles ($3.6 million), according to data from the research company Movie Research.
It was officially released on August 6, but earlier preview screenings had made the movie the previous weekend’s box office champion as well.
Still, the movie’s performance fell short of expectations, lagging significantly behind that of Minions, which set an all-time opening-weekend box office record last month and eventually became the year’s top grossing movie to date, outperforming Furious Seven and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
In second place was Self/less, which grossed 32.5 million rubles ($500,000) during its second weekend in theaters.
It was followed by Minions, which added another 25.7 million rubles ($394,000) to its gross in the fifth weekend of its theater run, with a total gross reaching just under 1.8 billion rubles ($27.7 million).
In fourth place was Pixels, which grossed 25.1 million rubles ($386,000), followed by Ant-Man, with 16.9 million rubles ($260,000).
The weekend’s highest grossing Russian movie, Reshala 2 (Problem Solver 2) arrived at No. 10.
Incidentally, the ruble’s sharp plunge in recent weeks had a negative impact on dollar-nominated box office numbers.
