Serbia has joined the fight for international film and TV shoots, introducing a 20 percent tax rebate for work shot in the country.
The new tax incentive will be a major selling point for the Balkan region, along with its low unit costs and old-world medieval cityscapes.
Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic has confirmed the plan, which is working its way through the country’s ministries. The government says the incentives are intended to benefit both visiting crews and the local production industry. It is not clear whether the final legislation will include a cap on total rebates for visiting shoots.
Recent features to shoot in the region include Roger Donaldson‘s The November Man, starring Pierce Brosnan, and Kevin Costner action film 3 Days to Kill.
Serbia can point to a long tradition in filmmaking going back to the 1970s and 1980s, when the former Yugoslavia was a hub for international film and television co-productions.
