FLORENCE, Italy — Sky Italia on Wednesday unveiled a plan to offer Italy’s second-level soccer league, the Serie B, to its customers on a pay-per-view basis, with almost all the revenue shared by the soccer clubs.
The plan is the latest effort to break a stalemate revolving around Serie B broadcast rights.
Since the teams are generally located in smaller markets they have smaller fan bases than the teams in Serie A. But the Lega Calcio, the soccer league’s administration body, said that the teams should share the lion’s share of broadcast revenue.
The Sky plan would send 95% of the revenue to the clubs, but it could attract additional customers to Sky’s subscriber base as well. A rival plan, floated by state broadcaster RAI, would broadcast game highlights and a pre-chosen game of the week for free.
