Trifecta Entertainment & Media has cleared the weekly syndicated series “American Idol Rewind” on the Fox Television Stations group, just three weeks after taking over distribution duties from Tribune Entertainment.
Trifecta has finalized seven new market clearances and six renewals for the hourlong series, from FremantleMedia North America, for fall. The new clearances include such major markets as New York (WNYW/ WWOR), Los Angeles (KTTV/ KCOP), Chicago (WFLD/ WPWR), Dallas (KDFW/ KDFI), Washington (WTTG/ WDCA), Houston (KRIV/ KTXH) and Tampa, Fla. (WTVT).
The other markets are Detroit (WJBK), Phoenix (KSAZ/KUTP), Minneapolis (KMSP/WFTC), Orlando (WOFL/WRBW), Baltimore (WUTB) and Gainesville, Fla. (WOGX).
The deal gives “Idol” an even bigger presence across Fox, where the hit singing competition “American Idol,” also from FMNA, has its seventh-season debut Tuesday. “Rewind,” entering its third season in syndication in the fall, is a tweaked version of the Fox show that includes never-before-seen content as well as updates and commentary from past contestants.
Trifecta took over distribution duties last month, following the news that Tribune was shutting down its distribution operations. Trifecta and FMNA are in the process of transitioning ad sales duties to Trifecta as well. “Rewind” is being offered with a 7/7 barter split.
“What’s pretty amazing is that we haven’t even been in business with Trifecta but a month, but they stepped up in a big way and delivered the Fox station group for us,” said David Shall, executive vp business operations/general counsel at FMNA.
Trifecta partner and CEO Hank Cohen said he will now be looking to secure renewals in the weeks ahead, including at NATPE’s confab in Las Vegas at month’s end.
“When it became clear that the Tribune stations as a group were not going to renew the show, we started working on another group,” he said. “With that deal secured, we’ll now be contacting individual stations,” including some owned by Tribune.
Cohen and Shall said the deal brings the show “home” to Fox.
“It’s a huge vote of confidence,” Shall said.
Trifecta also distributes such shows as “UFC Wired” and “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild.”
