Company spokesperson Matt Wing told the Associated Press that Uber has been unable to secure East Hampton licenses due to changes in the New York town’s rules.
The town requires taxis to be registered to a company with a business license and a local office, but the new rule change would require each driver to rent a separate office, Wing said.
The new structure was established after residents of the popular vacation destination were upset that the influx of Uber cars had been clogging traffic, CBS News reports.
The Associated Press reports that 20 Uber drivers have been charged with misdemeanors this month for lacking valid business licenses. According to Wing, Uber has obtained East Hampton licenses in the past.
Assistant town attorney Michael Sendlenski told the Associated Press that Uber can join forces with a licensed cab company to pick up passengers in East Hampton.
