AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands — The Dutch parliament announced Thursday that it will install a special committee to reinvestigate the November 2004 murder of director Theo van Gogh in the streets of Amsterdam. The majority of the Dutch political parties made it clear at a hearing that they were not satisfied with the results of last year’s investigation by the ministers of Internal Affairs and Justice.
Most parties declared that the results showed that the involved departments were not self-critical enough. The role of the Dutch Secret Service, AIVD, in particular came under under fire.
Much criticism was aimed at the way Van Gogh’s killer, Mohammed B. — already under surveillance — was investigated prior to taking the director’s life.
