The Lavely & Singer law firm isn’t known for being timid about representing celebrities. But they’ve gone the extra mile for “High School Musical” star Vanessa Hudgens by submitting her baby footprints as part of her defense of a breach-of-contract claim.
Here’s the story: Encino attorney Brian Schall sued Hudgens in September claiming she owes him more than $150,000 in fees for legal services and suggesting she “needs to go back to school to learn a very basic lesson in contractual obligations.” In responding to the complaint, Lavely associate Evan Spiegel argued that Schall can’t sue Hudgens because she was a minor at the time the contract was signed.
Hudgens was 16 when she retained Schall. To document that fact, Spiegel cleverly attached a copy of both her official birth certificate issued by the state and what appears to be a “vanity” certificate from Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital — complete with infant prints from the very feet that have helped Hudgens dance her way to stardom.
Another less humorous exhibit shows that Hudgens “disaffirmed” her contract with Schall in October. She turned 18 last December and under California law, a contract may be voidable if “disaffirmed by the minor before majority or within a reasonable time afterward.” A hearing on the motion is set December 5 in L.A. Superior Court.
