Longtime Viacom spokeswoman Carole Robinson is joining BuzzFeed as its first chief communications officer.
Robinson will be based out of BuzzFeed’s New York headquarters when she starts in the role Sept. 6, a little more than a year and a half after her departure from Viacom.
As the first person to serve as BuzzFeed’s communications chief, Robinson will report directly to its CEO Jonah Peretti and oversee all global communications strategy, public relations, media relationships and internal communications. Her team includes Liz Wasden, who joined BuzzFeed from Facebook in early 2015 to oversee PR.
Peretti announced Robinson’s hire in a memo to staff that BuzzFeed shared with The Hollywood Reporter. In it, he describes Robinson as a “creative and experienced communications strategist” and noted that she “will take our communications strategy to the next level and help us have an even bigger cultural impact as we grow.”

Robinson spent much of her career at Viacom, beginning at MTV in its early days before holding several senior-level communications roles at the network as well as its corporate owner. She had spent more than three years as executive vp corporate and marketing communications at Viacom when she left the company in March 2015. For the last six months she has been consulting with First Look Media, the news organization founded by Pierre Omidyar.
“I am so thrilled to join BuzzFeed and am confident that the company’s visionary leadership and killer team, along with its unique mix of content, make it the next great media company,” she said. “I’m looking forward to Tasty leftovers in the office, discovering which Disney princess is most me, and working with the amazing comms team.”
