Viacom has stopped offering MTV Greece as a free-to-air network and has transitioned it to a pay TV channel business model.
“Viacom constantly monitors international and local markets carefully to identify free-to-air, pay and non-linear business opportunities as part of our 360-degree distribution strategy,” the company said Wednesday in a statement. “We have decided, in conjunction with [partner] Restis Group, to change the business model for MTV in Greece. There was considerable overlap with Nickelodeon, both in content and demographic target.”
New pay TV distribution partners OTE and Nova have started offering the new MTV in the country this week. The change is expected to increase MTV’s distribution and reach in Greece.
MTV is in most markets as a pay TV network, but it has been a free-to-air channel in some. In 2013, Viacom also moved MTV to a pay TV model in Brazil.
“MTV has found an excellent position on pay platforms in other territories such as Spain, Italy, Middle East and Northern Africa, Russia and Brazil,” the company added. “There is a great opportunity and exciting future for the MTV brand on pay platforms in Greece. We will continue to collaborate with Restis Group for the management of Nickelodeon in Greece.”
