Warner Bros. International Television Distribution earlier this year bypassed local broadcasters to license CW’s The 100 to Netflix Canada.
Now the U.S. distributor has sold a raft of new and library titles to Shomi, the upstart Canadian SVOD aiming to fend off stiff competition from Netflix Canada. As part of its distribution agreement with Warner Bros., Shomi has snagged the exclusive streaming rights to U.S. network shows like 2 Broke Girls, Two and a Half Men, Shameless and Falling Skies.
Other titles landing with Shomi, and out of the grasp of Netflix Canada, include catch-up episodes for One Tree Hill, Revolution, Veronica Mars and The West Wing. Also included in the catalog deal are film titles like Blade Runner, Two Weeks Notice, Ocean’s Eleven, Unforgiven, Waiting for Guffman, the Lethal Weapon series and the Mad Max movies.
Shaw Media, which has a long-standing output deal with Warner Bros., is launching Shomi as part of a joint venture with rival Rogers Media. Shomi will launch in November, initially for Rogers and Shaw Internet or cable TV subscribers for $8.99 per month.
The homegrown SVOD unveiled earlier supply deals with Starz Digital Media and 20th Century Fox Television Distribution.
Netflix, which launched in Canada in 2010, is set to compete with Shomi and yet another Canadian video portal planned from Bell Media as consumers here increasingly view film and TV series online.
