Universal Music Group claims to have set the record for the most over-the-air full song downloads to mobile phones by a single track. Japanese act GreeeeN reportedly has sold more than 1 million copies of the single “Aiuta” on mobile phones since its May 16 release. The physical version of the single, which has proved a popular ringtone and ringback tone, has sold 250,000 copies. According to UMG Japan, all digital configurations of the single have topped 3 million sold.
SYDNEY — Indian actress Shabana Azmi will be jury president for November’s inaugural Asia Pacific Screen Awards in Australia, organizers said Monday. Azmi, five-time winner of India’s national film prize for best actress, has starred in 140 Indian films including Deepa Mehta’s “Fire” and Shekhar Kapur’s “Masoom.” She’s also had roles in such productions as John Schlesinger’s “Madame Sousatzka” and Ismail Merchant’s “In Custody.” A noted social activist, Azmi won the Gandhi Foundation International Peace Award for her work with the slum dwellers of Mumbai in 2006.
LONDON — FremantleMedia Enterprises on Monday said that it is launching a download-to-own, or rent, Web portal for consumers looking for good old-fashioned laughs. FME head David Ellender said the site, set to launch this month, will become “the digital home” for FME’s back catalog of comedy programming, including output for such famous comedy names of yesteryear as Tommy Cooper, Frankie Howerd and Jim Davidson will be available at TVComedyClassics.com. FME also will brand upcoming DVD releases with the TVComedyClassics stamp to build awareness.
