COLOGNE, Germany — Kinowelt International has acquired the library of insolvent German rights handler Cine-International. The Cine-International catalog includes such European art house titles as Rudolf Thome’s “Red and Blue,” Josef Vilsmaier’s “Autumn Milk,” Werner Herzog’s “Scream of Stone” and Liv Ullmann’s “Kristin Lavransdatter.” The acquisition follows a similar deal earlier this year that saw Kinowelt acquire the back catalog of defunct production/ financing group Bioskop Film. Kinowelt’s library already includes some of the best-known titles from such New German Cinema directors as Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Volker Schlondorff.
NEW DELHI — Bangalore, India-based Virgin Comics and Sony Online Entertainment have pacted for an online gaming property based on Virgin’s “Ramayan 3392,” based on an ancient Sanskrit epic. The founders of Virgin Comics and its animation affiliate include Virgin chief Richard Branson, director Shekhar Kapur and new age guru/author Deepak Chopra. The “Ramayan” comic was jointly developed by Kapur and Chopra and was released in the U.S. a year ago.
D’nA joins Brainpool
COLOGNE, Germany — Germany’s leading comedy production company Brainpool TV has acquired a 74.9% stake in D’nA Prods., a boutique company renowned for its talent in spotting up-and-coming comedians. D’nA also produces “Nightwash,” a low-budget stand-up show that airs on Comedy Central in Germany and runs Cologne’s annual stand-up comedy festival. D’nA founder Klaus-Jurgen Deuser will stay on as head of the company. Both partners declined to discuss financial details of the deal.
