Just like magic, social media star and digital magician Zach King is turning his popular online videos into a three-book series and a feature film.
In a landmark deal for a digital star, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment has preemptively optioned the feature film rights to King’s debut novel, My Magical Life. Simultaneously, HarperCollins Children’s Books has acquired My Magical Life in a competitive auction, with plans for a three-book series that will publish its first installment in fall 2017.
My Magical Life tells the story of 11-year-old Zach King, who has magical powers like everyone in his family but, despite his training, is having trouble harnessing his abilities. Zach’s parents send him to the scariest of all real worlds, middle school, to help him appreciate his natural gifts. Now it is up to Zach to find a way to survive the seventh grade by using his magical abilities to become the most popular kid in school.
King will serve as executive producer on the film and will also create an interactive, augmented reality app that brings My Magical Life to digital.
“My team and I are overjoyed and honored to be partnering with Amblin to help bring a fun movie experience to the 24 million cumulative fans that tune in to our online videos,” said King. “This IP is close to my heart — I mean the character is literally a middle schooler version of me. I know that Amblin and my team are going to do something really special with the brand and give even more life to the backstory of this magical character and his family.”
King, 26, has been posting editing tips on his website since 2008 and later took his talents to YouTube and Vine. He now frequently posts his videos on Instagram, where he has more than 16 million followers. Across all platforms, he has more than 21 million followers.
His signature videos, which have landed him on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Good Morning America, play like magic tricks, using editing to mimic slight of hand. For example, in one recent video, he turned a stack of fan mail into doves. In another, he pulled an umbrella out of a beanie.
King, who co-directed the lyric video for Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” also has a production company that creates videos for brands such as Disney, Nike and Coca-Cola.
