AOL is launching a free streaming movies service via an agreement with Miramax.
Films from Miramax’s library of titles will be available to stream online and via mobile and other connected devices, all from Miramax’s own channel.
“We continue to evolve our content strategy to include all screens and all experiences,” said AOL Video president Ran Harnevo in a statement. “With our Miramax partnership, we have our first foray into film and longform, bringing a cinematic experience to our premium content library and across our connected TV experiences. Having a premium launch partner in Miramax means that we bring some of the best, award-winning content to the web in a format that is easily accessible to consumers.”
The films offered will be refreshed monthly, and AOL users will be able to add movies to their regular rotation of news and entertainment video.
Miramax evp global digital Beth Minehart added: “Creating an ad-supported Miramax-branded channel on the popular AOL On Network is an exciting step as we remain committed to reaching Miramax fans through new and innovative platforms. We are delighted to partner with AOL on this digital offering, and we look forward to bringing a sampling of our iconic films to the AOL audience through its fast-growing multi-screen distribution network.”
AOL recently added a video portal to its homepage, which will feature clips from both the company’s own brands like Moviefone and Huffpost Live as well as partners like ESPN, Conde Nast Entertainment and The Wall Street Journal.
Miramax, which also has streaming deals with Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service, has been trying to monetize its film library, which contains more than 700 titles. New chairman Thomas Barrack recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the company would also be interested in acquiring other libraries and returning to producing its own TV series and movies.
