Australian soap opera Neighbours will make its American debut July 14 on Hulu.
New episodes of the half-hour drama, which follows life on suburban Ramsay Street, will debut Monday through Friday on the free, ad-supported platform and its ad-free subscription service, Hulu Plus. The five weekly episodes will air four weeks after their Australian broadcast.
The U.S. premiere of Neighbours will feature a guest stint from actress-singer Paula Abdul. The episode, which features Abdul as herself, will air on July 18.
Neighbours, distributed internationally by FremantleMedia International, joins a growing roster of soap operas available on Hulu. The series was first broadcast in 1985 and has since aired more than 6,900 episodes, featuring such stars as Margot Robbie (Wolf of Wall Street), Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Russell Crowe (Gladiator) and singer Kyle Minogue.
“Neighbours provides a delicious daily dose of Australian sunshine to soap opera fans, and thanks to Hulu, we’re coming to the U.S. at a perfect entry point for first-time viewers,” said Jeff Siegel, vp digital distribution and home entertainment at FremantleMedia. “The drama, the excitement and the intrigue are all wonderfully accessible to anyone eager to get hooked on the compelling storylines of Australia’s longest-running scripted television series.”
