Fan fiction author Anna Todd is expanding the universe of her One Direction-inspired novels with a mobile app.
The app will give fans of the After novel franchise an opportunity to collaborate with Todd on ideas for her upcoming books, including new characters and cover art. They also will be able to participate in creative contests and receive exclusive advice from Todd about how to self-publish their own work.
Todd, 26, became an overnight literary sensation with After, a piece of fan fiction about One Direction’s Harry Styles that she self-published on writer community Wattpad. The popularity of the book caused a bidding war for the publishing rights, which Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books eventually won, and a film development deal with Paramount.
Todd has since written three novels in the After series, which have been viewed more than 1 billion times on Wattpad, and in December released Before, told from the point of view of the Styles-esque male protagonist.
For the app, Todd has teamed up with Victorious, a Santa Monica startup that has until this point worked primarily with social media stars to launch their stand-alone apps. Victorious is currently powering apps for Nash Grier, Ryan Higa, Lilly Singh and more than 80 other creators.
Todd is repped by Management 360 across books, film, TV and digital.
