Original podcast production is exploding as media companies race to capture the growing audience and cash in on the moneymaking opportunities. Now a company that has been operating largely behind the scenes is stepping into the fray.
Cadence13, the four-year-old podcast production and distribution shop, is launching an originals banner through which it plans to release a number of unscripted audio stories. Led by chief content officer Chris Corcoran and executive vp production Zak Levitt, C13Originals is developing a slate of shows that will span genres, from true crime to music. The first show under the C13Originals banner is audio docuseries Gangster Capitalism, which will offer an in-depth look at white collar corruption in America.
“We love developing shows with our partners, being a part of their vision,” says Corcoran. “As the medium evolves, we want to grow and develop our own IP.”
C13Originals will have its official coming out in May with the launch of Gangster Capitalism, which Corcoran says will “go deep on white collar crime and how it’s affecting culture as a whole.” The first season will focus on Operation Varsity Blues, better known as the college admissions scandal, which led federal prosecutors to charge some 50 people who cheated or used bribery to have their children admitted into universities around the country. Andrew Jenks, host of another podcast series, What Really Happened?, will co-write and host the first season of Gangster Capitalism.
New York-based Cadence13 has positioned itself in the podcast industry as a one-stop shop for content creators. It offers access to its studios, publishing and distribution capabilities, advertiser relationships and audience development tools. A number of creatives and media companies have partnered with Cadence13 on their podcasts, including Crooked Media, Tenderfoot TV and Goop. In the years since Cadence13 first launched, the podcast industry has grown significantly, boosted by the popularity of shows like the New York Times‘ The Daily and Serial’s S-Town. In 2017, total podcast industry revenues reached $314 million. In February, Spotify acquired podcast startups Gimlet Media and Anchor for a combined $340 million.
With C13Originals, the company seeks to bring a documentary approach to podcast development. It currently has half a dozen new projects that will be released within the next year. C13Originals has staffed up with a team that has extensive unscripted film experience. In addition to Levitt, a filmmaker who worked with Cadence13 on TNT collaboration Root of Evil and has directed a number of sports documentaries including The Dream Team, others who have joined the originals group include documentary producer and showrunner Lloyd Lochridge, producer and editor Perry Crowell and producer Terence Malangone. Notes Corcoran, “We can create an environment where artists come in and we really develop ideas with them.”
