Podcasting startup Gimlet Media has appointed Hulu veteran Jenny Wall as its first chief marketing officer.
In her new role, Wall will oversee all marketing and audience growth for the company behind the podcasts Reply All, Homecoming and StartUp.
Wall, citing the growth in the podcasting industry in recent years, tells The Hollywood Reporter that Gimlet “has the potential to be the HBO of audio.” The three-year-old company has produced more than a dozen podcasts, but has to date relied primarily on word of mouth to grow its audience. Now, Wall will seek to build the brand name.
Wall will bring to Gimlet several years of experience working at HBO, Netflix and, most recently, Hulu. At Hulu, she served as senior vp and head of marketing, overseeing marketing, promotion and creativity for the company and its shows, including The Handmaid’s Tale. She left Hulu in May. While she was at Hulu, the company underwent a dramatic transformation, dropping its free tier and adding a live television bundle.
“Jenny brings over two decades of entertainment marketing experience, with a proven track record for sparking cultural moments through stories that matter, from House of Cards to The Handmaid’s Tale,” said Gimlet co-founder and president Matt Lieber. “She has worked to elevate the most significant new platforms in entertainment — HBO, Netflix, Hulu — and I can’t wait to see how her innovative, risk-taking approach will advance our growth in this new world of audio. I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Jenny onboard as Gimlet enters a pivotal, exciting phase for the company and audio industry at large.”
Part of Wall’s focus at Gimlet will be developing marketing strategies for the film and television projects that Gimlet is adapting from its audio slate. Later this year, ABC will debut Alex, Inc., starring Zach Braff, based on StartUp; Sam Esmail is currently working on an adaptation of Homecoming for Amazon, starring Julia Roberts; and Richard Linklater has optioned the rights to Reply All episode “Man of the People,” with Robert Downey Jr. attached to star.
“I’ve been on the other side of the business,” says Wall. “I’m hoping I can bring some experience there that’s helpful.”
Wall will be based out of Gimlet’s Brooklyn headquarters.
