EDINBURGH – Google will launch its internet TV platform Google TV to British within six months, CEO Eric Schmidt will tell an audience of British broadcasters Friday.
Aiming to create a new generation of internet TV users who can use their TV screen the way they currently use their Mac or PC, and switch easily between the two, the service will give British users access to popular catch-up services like the BBC’s iPlayer and Channel 4’s 4OD from the sofa and watch them on their living room TV sets.
However, it will also require users to buy a set top box at an undisclosed price point into a market that already has a great deal of pay-TV, catch-up TV and on-demand TV-enabled game consoles as competition, albeit not yet anything that compares in terms of converting a television into a PC.
Schmidt will outline his vision to an audience of British TV executives in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, when he delivers the prestigious MacTaggart lecture at the Edinburgh International Television Festival Friday night.
