Game of Thrones fans will have a few more options on where to watch Daenerys and her dragons when the series returns.
Dish Network’s Sling TV is adding HBO to its slate of over-the-top programming ahead of the Game of Thrones premiere on April 12. For an extra $15 a month when customers sign up for the Best of Live TV package, they will have access to one live HBO channel and a video-on-demand library identical to the one offered on HBO Go and soon on HBO Now.
“Sling TV is bringing HBO to our customers on all of our supported devices in time for one of the most important TV moments of the year,” said Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch. “HBO delivers hit shows and movies that TV viewers crave, and with this addition we’re adding another heavy hitter to a lineup that includes ESPN, AMC, TNT and more.”
Since its launch in February, with partners including ESPN, Disney Channel and Food Network, Sling TV has has been bolstering its content offerings, adding programming from AMC and EPIX, among others. The pact with HBO is part of a larger carriage agreement between Dish, Time Warner’s Turner Broadcasting and HBO to ensure that Dish continues to offer TNT, TBS and other networks.
“It has always been our desire to make the HBO subscription widely accessible,” said HBO president of global distribution Tom Woodbury. “Sling TV is a part of that ongoing evolution, and we believe HBO is a great addition to the platform.”
Sling TV’s core Best of Live TV package costs $20 a month. The service — which is accessible on Roku, Xbox One, Android and iOS devices, among others — also offers add-ons such as Sports Extra or Kids Extra for an additional $5 a month.
HBO is also planning the launch of standalone streaming service HBO Now on April 12 to coincide with the premieres of Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley. Sling TV has not yet announced when HBO will become available on its platform.
