Virtual reality startup Jaunt is building out its content division and has promoted one of its own to oversee the initiative.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company has upped Tom Vance to head of content, where he will oversee the team of executive producers and creative directors it has tapped for original VR experiences. Jaunt is currently hiring a team of producers across four different genres, including scripted and talent-focused entertainment, documentaries focused on travel and adventure, sports experiences and music content.
Vance, who previously served as head of narrative content, will remain based out of the company’s Santa Monica-based Jaunt Studios division and will report to Jaunt Studios president Cliff Plumer.
In May, Jaunt, which last year raised $66 million from a cadre of investors that included Disney and Evolution Media Partners, parted ways with CEO Jens Christensen and appointed CTO Arthur van Hoff as interim chief as it conducts a CEO search. The company offers a suite of professional VR tools, including a camera, but has also pushed into the creation of immersive content. So far, Jaunt has released a virtual reality experience of a Paul McCartney concert, several projects with ABC News, including an experience shot inside North Korea, and other pieces.
“We’re at a turning point for the company,” says Vance. “We’re really looking to hit the ground running later this year with a full team of dedicated executives to really bring story expertise to their specific verticals.”
He adds: “It’s important to tell stories for a broad audience and across all of these different verticals. We want to be in a position to deliver high-quality entertainment across all of the different genres of VR to grow into being a VR media company at large.”
Vance joined Jaunt in 2015 after three years at Hutch Parker Entertainment, the producer’s shingle set up at 20th Century Fox. He previously spent time at New Regency and Village Roadshow.
