Legendary Entertainment is looking to Amy Poehler to add to its digital repertoire.
The media company has acquired Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party, an online community that seeks to empower young women. It joins Chris Hardwick‘s Nerdist and Felicia Day‘s Geek & Sundry as part of the Legendary Digital Network, a division of the company that is growing as a destination for geeky, fanboy internet content.
Created in 2008 by Poehler, Meredith Walker and Amy Miles, Smart Girls now has more than 550,000 fans on Facebook and over 5 million views on its YouTube channel. Through the acquisition, the female-targeting brand will have access to Legendary’s fully supported platform — which provides advertising, marking, audience development and production infrastructure — for which it will develop branded premium content.
“All of us at Legendary are thrilled to be aligned with the iconic and inspiring Amy Poehler and her team at Smart Girls,” said Legendary’s president of television and digital media Bruce Rosenblum. “Amy, Meredith and Amy have created a special online community for young women that will fit naturally with our digital efforts. We genuinely look forward to supporting the growth of their brand and influence across our digital platform.”
Added Poehler: “We at Smart Girls are excited to be working with Legendary and look forward to providing funny and inspirational content for all of the goofballs out there.”
Legendary launched its digital effort in 2013, and has since acquired the rights to produce a digital series based on the video game franchise Dead Rising for Crackle and Content Media. Legendary’s television division also recently announced a deal with Netflix for the original series Love from Judd Apatow, Paul Rust and Lesley Arfin.
