Stealth augmented reality startup Illumix has raised $8.6 million in seed funding to grow its team as it prepares to launch two new gaming titles in 2019.
The company’s seed fundraising round was led by Maveron and Lightspeed Venture Partners and included participation from Michael Bay’s 451 Media, Radar Partners and Unusual Ventures.
Founded by Kirin Sinha, one-year-old Illumix has been operating quietly as it builds up its AR technology that it will use to create games that adapt no matter the player’s environment.
“Our thesis has always been very centered around how you build AR for the consumer for today,” says Sinha, who prior to running Illumix was the founder of nonprofit SHINE for Girls. She explains that she wanted her games to be accessible to people on their phones and not “require specialized or dedicated hardware to really add value to the gamer’s life.”
Illumix currently has two titles in the works that it plans to release next year. To prepare for the launch, Sinha is looking to grow her Bay Area-based team from 11 to nearly 30.
With Maveron and Lightspeed, Illumix found investors that bring deep consumer technology knowledge and can help the team navigate the challenge of creating a game that keeps players engaged.
“In Kirin, we met a brilliant entrepreneur who is passionate about building a world class gaming studio while redefining what is possible on mobile devices and with augmented reality,” said Maveron partner David Wu in a statement. “With the rapid evolution and adoption of augmented reality technology, we believe that Illumix is perfectly positioned to build the defining consumer brand in creating transformative mixed reality games that integrated into people’s daily lives.”
Added Lightspeed partner Nicole Quinn, “At Lightspeed, we look for companies that will redefine the way we live and work. Illumix’s team and vision, coupled with its custom technology, has the power to transform AR beyond novelty or companion experiences and define a new category in interactive entertainment.”
