Lionsgate and Hemisphere Media on Tuesday launched a premium Spanish-language subscription VOD service, Pantaya, aimed at the Hispanic moviegoing audience in the U.S.
The launch comes as content companies are strategically positioning themselves to capture the burgeoning Hispanic market, growing in size and spending power. Pantaya will target Spanish-speaking and bilingual Hispanic viewers with current and classic films, documentaries, concerts and other original content.
Spanish language media giant Univision is a marketing partner in Pantaya, contributing film titles from their library, but not an investment partner.
The launch of Pantaya coincides with digital media player Latin Everywhere rolling out Pongalo, a free worldwide Spanish-language web and mobile streaming service with a library of telenovelas. Pantaya and Pongalo will battle for Spanish-speaking consumers increasingly viewing rival streamers like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu.
Pantaya becomes the exclusive streaming window for recent movie releases from Pantelion Films, a joint venture between Lionsgate and Televisa, including No Manches Frida and Instructions Not Included. Pantelion Films and Pantaya CEO Paul Presburger and Pantelion COO Edward Allen will oversee the new streamer, priced at $5.99 a month after a seven-day free trial.
The streamer is available online and on iOS, Android and the Roku platform in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, as well as to Prime members on Amazon Channels in the U.S. As a competitive edge, Pantaya will offer films released day-and-date with their debut in Latin American theaters, and films from Lionsgate’s 16,000 title library dubbed in Spanish.
Upcoming first-run exclusive titles headed to the streamer include the Dominican Republic theatrical success Los Domirriquenos and the latest installment of the Colombian hit franchise El Paseo. “By drawing upon the blockbuster films, vast libraries and world-class programming resources of its partners, Pantaya is positioned to become a compelling value proposition for Spanish-language and bilingual audiences across the country,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said in a statement.
Hemisphere CEO Alan Sokol in his own statement said Pantaya will be “user friendly, accessible and will provide Hispanic movie lovers in the U.S. an entirely new way to watch movies and connect with their cultures.”
