Thriller The Thinning is headed to YouTube Red.
The film, which hails from Legendary Digital Studios, will debut on YouTube’s subscription streaming service later this year.
The Thinning stars Viner Logan Paul and Peyton List (Jessie) as two students in a world where population control is dictated by a high school aptitude test who decide to expose the system and take it down. Lia Marie Johnson, Calum Worthy (Austin & Ally) and Ryan Newman (The Thundermans) also star in the project, which was directed by Michael Gallagher (Internet Famous).
“We are thrilled to partner with YouTube Red to release The Thinning,” said Greg Siegel, senior vp development and production at Legendary Digital Studios. “The platform gives our film an exciting opportunity to connect with a huge audience of digitally native fans eager to see their favorite performers in high-end content in a proven genre.”
Added YouTube content chief Susanne Daniels: “We know our audience will be captivated by the film’s suspenseful storytelling and brave characters as they fight for survival. The Thinning will be the first feature-length thriller that we are releasing on YouTube Red, and we believe it has all of the elements to be wildly popular with our fans.”
The Thinning, announced onstage during YouTube’s turn in front of the press at the Television Critics Association’s summer tour, is one of several projects headed to YouTube Red. The $10 a month subscription service is also working on a series adaptation of Step Up. YouTube also announced Friday that it has ordered a sequel of Lazer Team and a new original from MyLifeAsEva creator Eva Gutowski.
