Above Average, the digital comedy studio of Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video, is launching a residency program for up-and-coming comedians looking to break into the business.
The 18-month, paid program will feature residencies across Above Average’s divisions, including directing, editing, writing, performing, graphics and social production.
“We’re thrilled to announce this program, which affords incoming residents the platform and resources to build strong portfolios and industry relationships, while simultaneously supplying our studio’s creative engine with a diverse, rotational pool of talent,” said Above Average president Jen Danielson, adding, “By championing emerging talent, we’ve fostered stronger relationships that better serve our business in the long run.”

Founded in 2012, Above Average has become a creative outlet for many of the comedians who work with Michaels through Saturday Night Live and the other shows produced via Broadway Video. Its popular web series have included 7 Minutes in Heaven from former SNL writer Mike O’Brien and Sound Advice from SNL cast member Vanessa Bayer. But rising Above Average talent have also gone on to work at Late Night With Seth Meyers, SNL and Mozart in the Jungle. Noted Danielson, “Due to this repeated advancement, it felt only natural to formalize a residency program that allows us to support the professional ambitions of talent on a larger and more transparent scale.”
Above Average is taking applications for the program through April 1 and plans to announce its inaugural class later that month. Members of the program will share in the equity of IP they develop during the residency.
The company raised $15 million from Turner Broadcasting and Advance Vixeid Partners last year.
