NEW YORK – Netflix has made it easier for children and their families to find kid-friendly TV shows and movies on its streaming service with the launch of what it calls its new “Just for Kids” experience.
A tab at the top of the Netflix homepage will help users find content for children 12 and under, including icons of favorite characters, such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora The Explorer, Phineas and Ferb and Big Bird.
Kids content is also presented based on such genres as superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs and girl power.
Netflix used ratings and reviews from Common Sense Media, a non-profit that provides ratings, reviews and information.
Almost half of the 25 million Netflix members in the U.S. and Canada have instantly watched at least two movies or shows for kids in the last 90 days, the firm said.
“Kids discover and categorize movies and TV shows differently than adults,” said Todd Yellin, Netflix vp of product innovation. “Just as we have revolutionized the way people find the movies and shows they want to watch when and how they want to, we’re making it easier for kids and parents alike to have the best possible Netflix experience.”
Currently, “Just for Kids” is available via the Netflix site. Similar functionality will come to Netflix on the Wii, iPad, Xbox, Playstation and other devices over the next year, the company said.
