Getty ImagesPublic radio fans won’t have to tune their radio dials to hear Wait, Wait … Don’t Tell Me! next month.
The comedic NPR and WBEZ-Chicago news-quiz program will be beaming into movie theaters May 2 through a partnership with NCM Fathom Events and BY Experience. The live performance will be coming from New York University’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.
“I always think we’re having this really great dinner party and are inviting the radio listeners to come participate,” host Peter Sagal told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m hoping this works well enough that the people in the movie theaters will be feeling the same thing.”

The show’s panelists will include Paula Poundstone, Mo Rocca and Tom Bodett. Steve Martin will also make a special appearance as the special “Not My Job” guest. Sagal teases that the show will have a live band for the first time, but insists he can’t say who because the contract hasn’t been signed.
Sagal said he and the Wait, Wait team decided not to “jazz it up too much” when it comes to adding visual elements they wouldn’t normally include.
“It’s always a challenge because on the one hand, you want people to enjoy what they’re seeing,” Sagal said. “Yet at the same time, our show is a radio show. Our show is a conversation.”
The two-hour show begins at 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. CT and is tape-delayed to 7:00 p.m. MT/ 8:00 p.m. PT.
