Gamers haven’t been able to play a Mission: Impossible game on a console in years, but Paramount Digital Entertainment and online game maker Funtactix have partnered to deliver the next best thing. Launching Monday on Facebook, Mission: Impossible The Game is a new social game that spans the entire film Paramount Pictures franchise, including the new Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol movie starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Paula Patton.
Rather than placing gamers in the role of Ethan Hunt as past game incarnations have done, the new game lets players assume the roles Impossible Mission Force (IMF) agents and assemble unique teams to embark on multiplayer action. The game launches with eight missions that span 200 levels and 50 locales around the globe. Players will have access to the latest IMF gadgets and equipment straight from the movies. In the coming weeks, a new level based on the Brad Bird-directed Ghost Protocol will be introduced.
“Mission: Impossible The Game goes well beyond a typical social game and brings an unprecedented level of detail and authenticity,” said Sam Glassenberg, CEO of Funtactix. “It allows fans of the action-packed Mission: Impossible movies to create an agent in the official M:I universe and live a life of espionage and covert operations with their real-life friends as accomplices.”
Amy Powell, president of Insurge Pictures & Paramount Digital Entertainment and executive vp interactive marketing at Paramount Pictures, said that integrating unique experiences and rewards into the Mission: Impossible game is a new way for Paramount to interact with the Facebook community and build on the excitement for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in an organic way.
Over the coming weeks, Paramount will use the Facebook game to promote the fourth action film in the film franchise beyond the usual movie trailers and clips. Players will be able to win tickets to the U.S. premiere of the film as well as a hometown screening of the movie for 30 friends. Other prizes that will be awarded through the game include movie passes to the film, signed movie posters, hats, t-shirts and Mission: Impossible Blu-ray and DVD sets from Paramount Home Entertainment.
This game marks the second collaboration between Paramount and Funtactix, which entered into a long-term partnership to bring movie properties to the online and social gaming space. This March, the two companies released Rango: The WORLD, an online multiplayer game that launched day-and-date with Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon Movies animated feature film Rango starring Johnny Depp.
