Niantic Inc.’s mobile AR game, Pokémon Go, had a massive month in April as players spent more than $65 million worldwide in the game, an increase of 15 percent year-over-year, according to a new report by analytics firm Sensor Tower.
The growth was driven in large part by the game’s “Eggstravaganza” event that ran from April 16-23. The third annual event granted players the opportunity to catch rare in-game monsters and collect bonuses for their roster of pocket monsters. There’s also the upcoming Detective Pikachu hitting theaters this week, which has raised interest in the Pokémon brand through extensive marketing.
Last month’s success continues a solid year for the title, which has already grossed $270 million in 2019, up 33 percent over the same period last year.
In its lifetime, Pokémon Go has grossed over $2 billion since its initial release in July 2016.
In January, Niantic revealed that it had raised $245 million in Series C financing, bringing the company’s valuation to over $4 billion. Niantic is set to launch its latest game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, alongside Warner Bros.’ WB Games division, later this year.
