As movie studios continue to stake out digital territory to promote their film libraries, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is introducing My Daily Clip, a new app for iPhone and iPad that allows users to receive a new movie scene every day while providing access to thousands of films from its library.
My Daily Clip is a free app available at Apple’s App Store, as well as at Facebook. It allows viewers to watch a clip each day from films such as Spider-Man, Bridge on the River Kwai and Blackhawk Down. The app also allows users to share these clips via email or Facebook, and to purchase the full-length feature directly from iTunes.
“My Daily Clip is a great way to discover and share movies on your mobile device,” said Rich Berger, senior vp, worldwide digital strategy and operations at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. “This app gives the best of both worlds – instant gratification on the go with clips, and an easy link to buy the film for viewing on the go, or at home.”
The app adapts video quality to bandwidth and download speeds.
The announcement follows on the heels of another initiative that Sony announced Wednesday when it said it would offer enhanced features like enhanced search and clip-and-save functions on new movies it offers for digital purchase.
While the new Sony app takes advantage of Facebook’s social network to spread the word about movies that are available for purchase on iTunes, unlike the Warners Bros. initiative announced earlier this week, it does not offer full movies for streaming on Facebook itself.
However, John Calkins, SPHE executive vp global digital and commercial innovation said Wednesday that the studio is also looking at the possibility of offering film rentals on Facebook.
